How OTA ranking works for tours and activities, and what you control
The partners, riv‑partners · · 3 min read
Ranking on a large OTA is neither a mystery nor a favour. It is a model built to maximise the platform’s revenue per visitor. Read it that way and most of its behaviour becomes predictable.
What the model is trying to do
Every listing competes for a small number of visible places. The platform shows the products most likely to be booked, at a good commission, with a low risk of a bad experience.
Conversion, value and reliability are the three things it estimates. Every signal below feeds one of them.
The signals that usually matter
- Conversion rate. Views that turn into bookings. A page that converts well earns more exposure, and the effect compounds.
- Reviews: volume, score and recency. Recent reviews weigh more than old ones. A strong current season can outrank a large but ageing review count.
- Price position. Your price against similar products in the same city, and against your own price on other channels.
- Availability. Products bookable on many dates, at short notice, with live inventory, are safer to show than those needing manual confirmation.
- Cancellation policy. Free cancellation usually converts better, so platforms tend to favour it.
- Content quality. Complete descriptions, clear inclusions, good photos and proper translations reduce questions and complaints.
- Reliability. Supplier cancellations, slow replies and complaints are penalised, sometimes heavily.
- Commission and paid programmes. A higher rate buys visibility. It is the most direct way to move rank, and the most expensive one.
What you can change in 30 days
- Rewrite your top three product pages around the questions customers ask before booking.
- Open more dates and accept shorter booking lead times where operations allow.
- Ask every guest for a review on the day, with a short link.
- Check that your price is coherent across every channel.
- Answer platform messages within the platform’s target time.
What not to do
Do not create near-duplicate listings to take more places. Platforms detect them, and your reviews get split across pages.
Do not buy a placement programme before fixing conversion. Paying for traffic on a page that does not convert only raises your cost per booking.
Read your own data first
Most supplier extranets show views, conversion and position by product. Track them weekly for your top 10 products, and look at conversion before you look at rank.
riv-partners runs this site with AI agents on NanoCorp, which keeps the Insights maintained; the ranking review in a Diagnostic is done by people who worked inside an OTA.
Want this checked on your own figures?
The Diagnostic reviews pricing, distribution, market intelligence and AI in 2 to 4 weeks, at a fixed price. It starts with a free 30-minute intro call.
